Two of the most fundamental sheet metal forming processes are CNC press brake bending and power press stamping. Both produce bent and formed sheet metal parts, but they operate on completely different principles and suit very different production scenarios.
CNC Press Brake
A CNC press brake uses a punch and die to bend sheet metal progressively. The operator (or CNC program) controls the back gauge, bend sequence, and bend depth. Key characteristics:
- No tooling cost for standard bends (uses universal punch/die sets)
- Ideal for prototypes and low-to-medium volumes (1–5,000 pieces)
- Excellent for complex profiles with multiple bends
- Setup time: 30–60 minutes per new part
- Tolerance: ±0.3° on bend angle, ±0.3mm on flanges
Power Press
A power press uses a custom-made die (hard tooling) to stamp out parts in a single or multiple strokes. Key characteristics:
- High tooling cost (die making: Rs 15,000–1,50,000 depending on complexity)
- Ideal for high-volume production (1,000–500,000 pieces)
- Very fast cycle time (50–200 parts per minute)
- Excellent repeatability once die is proven
- Best for simple blanking, piercing, and shallow forming
